Jobs shrinkage in papers to be 25% by 2018

Federal Report: Newspaper Jobs Will Decline 25% By 2018

By Joe Strupp

Published: December 16, 2009 2:10 PM ET
NEW YORK The newspaper industry is expected to lose nearly 25% of its jobs by 2018, according to a new federal Bureau of Labor Statistics report. Newspapers rank seventh among the top 10 industries slated for job losses.

BLS data shows that there were approximately 326,000 newspaper jobs at the end of 2008, with a prediction that there will be just 245,000 in 2018, a 24.8% drop.

Rick Edmonds, media business analyst at The Poynter Institute, said the prediction is not a surprise: "That is consistent with what has been happening the past three years. But I don't think the next three years will be as bad."

Expected newspaper job losses ranked behind only department stores, semiconductor and electronic component manufacturing, motor vehicle parts, postal services, printing, and cut-and-sew apparel manufacturing.

"One thing that would be supportive of newspaper employment is that 70% of daily newspapers have circulation under 50,000," Morton added. "Those kinds of newspapers have suffered far less than big city papers have. Going forward, they will suffer less", said newspaper analyst Jon Morton.

It's radio's turn for a requiem

The Citadel Broadcasting Corporation, one of US' largest radio broadcasters, filed for bankruptcy in New York on Sunday after agreeing to turn over control of the company to its creditors in exchange for reducing its debt.

The filing by the company, which owns 224 stations across the country and syndicates Don Imus's radio show, was not unexpected but does reflect the troubles plaguing the radio industry amid steep declines in advertising revenue and big debt loads.

The troubles of Citadel have been well documented. Citadel took on billions of dollars in debt in 2006 to finance its purchase of Disney's ABC Radio stations. But in the years that followed the deal, its revenues have plummeted as advertising dried up.

Citadel hired the investment bank Lazard and the law firm Kirkland & Ellis earlier this year to negotiate with the company's creditors, but the talks were contentious at times.

Just how Independent under Russian owner?

The owner of the Independent and the Independent on Sunday has said it is in exclusive talks to sell the titles to Russian businessman Alexander Lebedev, the owner of the Evening Standard.

Lebedev bought the Evening Standard, which is now given away free, earlier this year. Many newspapers are struggling with falling circulations as readers move increasingly to online content. They have also suffered during the recession from falling advertising revenues.

Independent News and Media has been struggling to repay debts but has now come to an agreement with creditors, allowing the on-off talks to resume, reports suggest. The group reported pre-tax loss of 161m euros (£144m at the time) last year, down from profits of 248m euros in 2007.

Manchester Evening News: Going, going ...

Guradian Media Group has confirmed that it has held "exploratory talks" about selling theManchester Evening News and its other regional newspapers.

The Scott Trust, the owner of GMG, is obliged by its constitution to safeguard the future of the Guardian "in perpetuity", but not the company's regional newspapers or the Observer.

GMG Regional Media reported a fall in operating profit to £500,000, compared with £14.3m in the year to 29 March 2008.

Earlier this year MEN Media closed all the editorial offices of its 22 weekly newspapers and cut up to 150 jobs across these titles and the Manchester Evening News, including 70 editorial roles, in a move to cut costs. Up to 41 out of 74 full-staff at Channel M were also made redundant. Surrey & Berkshire Media cut up to 95 jobs in a round of cost cutting.

Guardian News & Media, GMG's national newspaper division, made an operating loss of £36.8m in the year to 29 March, and is in the process of shedding more than 100 staff across its editorial and commercial operations to save money. Around 150 editorial and commercial staff have already left GNM this year.

The Husband Store.....

A store that sells new husbands has opened in New York City , where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates:

You may visit this store ONLY ONCE! There are six floors and the value of the products increase as the shopper ascends the flights. The shopper may choose any item from a particular floor, or may choose to go up to the next floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building!

So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband. On the first floor the sign on the door reads:

Floor 1 - These men Have   Jobs.

She is intrigued, but continues to the second floor, where the sign reads:

Floor 2 - These men Have Jobs and Love Kids.

'That's nice,' she thinks, 'but I want more.'

So she continues upward. The third floor sign reads:

Floor 3 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, and are Extremely Good Looking.

'Wow,' she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going.

She goes to the fourth floor and the sign reads:

Floor 4 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Good Looking and Help With Housework.

'Oh, mercy me!' she exclaims, 'I can hardly stand it!'

Still, she goes to the fifth floor and the sign reads:

Floor 5 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Gorgeous, Help with Housework, and Have a Strong Romantic Streak.

She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the sixth floor, where the sign  reads:

Floor 6 - You are visitor 31,456,012 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please. Thank you for shopping at the Husband Store.

PLEASE NOTE:

To avoid gender bias charges, the store's owner opened a New Wives store just across the street.

The first floor has wives that love sex.

The second floor has wives that love sex and have money and like beer.

The third, fourth, fifth and sixth floors have never been visited.
